Sanaa Lathan was born into a family of entertainers, her mother was an actress and dancer and her father was a television producer. When young, Lathan was very athletic and was active in dance and gymnastics giving her a natural progression into theatre and acting.
Sanaa Lathan got her start in theatre, performing in a number of Shakespeare plays and in off-Broadway productions following her training at Yale. Following this experience, she landed several roles in television shows including Family Matters, Moesha and NYPD Blue. Sanaa Lathan then appeared in the movie Blade with Wesley Snipes which led to several other film roles including The Wood (1998), Life (1999)and The Best Man(1999). Later, she had her breakout role in Love and Basketball (2000), where she was acclaimed for her powerful performance as a leading character playing opposite Omar Epps. For this role, she was nominated for an NAACP Image Award and Independent Spirit Award for Best Actress.
